#11 Tuesday – 1:00 p.m. Winter – 2012 (14 Weeks) Course Description Numerous social critics have expressed alarm over the decline of ethics and honesty and the rise of greed and corruption among our nation's elite. The public's sagging confidence in major U.S. institutions extends beyond government. Increasingly, big business has come to be viewed with distrust and cynicism. Elite deviance, in all its forms, now constitutes a major social problem for American society and much of the world as well. The various "Occupy……'s" are the latest and most public display of this. Elite deviance is the subject of intense debate. This deviance is not restricted to just legally defined crimes, but includes many unethical acts, harmful activities, civil and regulatory violations, and others. This type of deviance is extremely harmful because the actors/perpetrators involved have great resources, and the consequences of their acts are often national, international, or even global in scope. This S/DG will examine various forms of elite deviance – mischief in high places - in the recent past and the present. It will also address several theoretical approaches to deviance and possibilities for its control. Topics I---- The Nature of Elite Deviance: Theories and Examples. II--- Corporate Deviance: Monopoly, Fraud, and Manipulation. III-- Corporate Deviance: Human Jeopardy. IV-- National Defense. V--- Human Rights. VI-- Multinational Corporations. VII- Money and Politics. VIII- Corruption and Power. IX--- Domestic Political Deviance. X---- International Deviance. XI--- The Federal Government and Scandals. XII-- Sports. XIII – Religion.
